These natural wood sheds are easy and fun to assemble. They go together in a “Lincoln log” manner (remember those?) and make a great family project — or a solo one. You only need basic tools: a hammer, a mallet, a screwdriver. A team of one handyperson and one helper takes 8–12 hours to assemble the kit; many customers do it themselves and only hire a contractor for the foundation. We once had a jolly call from a customer who assembled her shed by herself while her husband was at work — the look on his face, she shared, was priceless.

Real she sheds
SolidBuild wooden shed kit includes wall and roof components, dual-pane glass doors and windows, all door and window hardware, floorboards (select models) and trim parts. All shed kits come with a few spare boards. You will have to separately acquire foundation materials, anchors (depending on the type of foundation) and roof materials, such as PVC roofing, shingles, tin roof etc. (see if you have some leftover material from your house!).
Building your wooden shed or cabin is easier than you think. Detailed instructions accompany each kit. A firm, level base is essential. A concrete slab or compressed gravel foundation work the best for any type of shed. Another great and popular option is a treated wood grid foundation which can be formed directly on the ground and filled with gravel or raised on concrete piers if the soil in your area is soft. The shed can also be assembled on patio stones, super spikes, or cinder blocks that are placed under the treated floor joists; however, these options are most suitable for warmer climates with little precipitation and firm level ground. The answer is yes, and no. The shed walls cannot be insulated using a traditional post-and-beam framing method with a drywall finish, as this type of construction prevents the wall boards from moving vertically when the wood expands or contracts and causes gaps and splits to open up. That said, you can — and most people do — insulate the roof and floor to keep the shed from overheating or over-cooling in winter. It can be done by installing a sub-floor and stuffing the space between the floor joists with the insulation material of choice. For the roof, form a 2x2 grid on top of the roof boards provided and fill it with insulation material, then cover with any other wood boards or plywood and install the roofing. SolidBuild garden sheds perform well as a tiny house or home office shed in temperatures as low as the 40s with a simple space heater, but may not be the best choice for a year-round residence in colder climates. We have customers who use them year-round in the Pacific Northwest, the Southeast, and alike; however, in areas experiencing deep winters, it's best for 3-season use.
Yes, several ways to wire your shed. The simplest option is running an extension cable from the house, and routing it under the shed floor to where you need connection. If your town regulations allow, you may create a dedicated junction box and run conduits with outlets where needed. The conduits can be run outside or inside, up to your preference. Note that in some locations a shed may not need a permit up to a certain square footage, but may require one if you want to wire it, even if the size falls into the no-permit limit.

Painting the exterior of the shed will ensure good protection of the wood. Using a dedicated primer with an exterior-grade paint is a more reliable option than using a 2-in-1 product. Staining may be tricky, in the sense that some stains, even exterior grade, don't provide the waterproofing. However, most deck stains will work perfectly for the shed too!
Most importantly, when painting or staining your shed, concentrate on all the small crevices to ensure the sealant penetrates those hard-to-reach spots — the areas around the interlocking corners, screws and branches. You may feel tempted to caulk the seams or corners; however, caulk obstructs the settling of the structure when the wood expands and contracts and causes unwanted gaps to open up between the boards. You can only use caulking between the first wall row and the floor joists or the foundation.
